Secure Online Transactions

I'm try my best to be secure in all my transactions on the Web, and I encourage others to do the same with some easy to use tools that I've found.

For generating one-time credit card numbers, PayPal first offered the "football." When you signed in to their site, you entered your ID and then the password, pressed the button on the football which gave you 6 digits to add to the password. This would then allow you to generate the one-time number, and it would also auto-fill the form on the Web page with the credit card info. So far, for over a year now, there've been no problems.

For managing passwords at other sites, I recommend LastPass. With a single master password, kept on your computer, you can create complex, and thereby strong passwords, for all of your sites. Again, this service will auto-fill the forms whenever you hit the site logon page. There are LastPast apps for Android smart phones and the Apple iPhone/iPod Touch.

I created a list of other computer security suggestions in the form of a PowerPoint presentation that I'm developing for a seminar on basic computer security.

I regularly cover computer security topics, including concerns about healthcare IT security and HIPAA in this journal.
